My Indignation.

Chile is a country of contrasts, we have plenty of landscapes, supposedly all the climates of the globe, social and economic stability yet…a monocultural and disrespectful country.

Historically from the different institutions, the country has sought for unity and social stability by means of making invisible the claims of several parts of society supporting only some aspect of national development and forgetting some other (i.e. we are still one of the countries with the biggest inequality rates) and though we have clearly made progress in several topics and areas, such as the minorities claims, educational costs, opening up of new and diverse economic sectors, etc. We still have a long way to go in order to make this country more inclusive, more “just” and a more balanced society.

Years ago we suffered from a dictatorship, later on, we had an economic boom. As a country, we have long before - and also after the dark ages, decided to endorse to the Human Rights Declaration, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Agreement 169 which is the convention concerning Indigenous and Tribal Peoples in Independent Countries, and still nowadays, 2018, those documents which have built the Chilean Society from the constitutional grounds, are agreements and rationalities that are overlooked and even heavily disrespected, in particular, in certain actions that ought to be condemned and not allowed by society all together.

I am particularly talking about the news launched last year which informed us about a group of Special Forces from the Chilean police entering and attacking a school in the south of Chile, where many indigenous people live and where many struggles are occurring at a daily basis. The news let us know about a big group of policemen entering the school after having threatened all the population inside by throwing lacrimogenous gas, apparently, in the search for extremists hiding inside and or around  the school premises. Obviously this news was commented by the off-stream press and was published by several independent media (I have copied some links below this commentary)

In such actions we can see what I was talking about regarding a disrespectful, monocultural and struggling society because the news is not important since it relates to the social sector which little emphasis has been placed upon, and beyond confirming my claims, I believe there are bigger questions which stimulate in me a bigger indignation.

After having watched this piece of news I wonder about up to what point we are going to not think over the extreme conditions in which the conflict with the Mapuches is being managed, I wonder about the day in which we will stop denying we have a long and deep conflict with our Indigenous population which obviously arises with the fact that one way or another, as a government, the agreement 169 has not been respected. I also wonder of how this action, against human rights and furthermore, these actions which break the endorsement to Children Rights, will be penalized by justice if penalized at all!

Entering a school and having war-like behaviours inside or around a school makes the lives of all those children and all that community sink in fear, it makes a whole community full of anger, and furthermore, not even in war events will police or navy be allowed to enter a school with unprotected children, just because soldiers have the morals of not affecting so much the future generations of a culture, unless the aim is genocide, soldiers would respect and ensure safety for children, but in the case of the Chilean police… I wonder, where’s their morals?

With this blog I would like to state my absolute indignation with the police officers, with the central and regional government of the Araucanía, I would like to state the strongest disapproval of their way to conduct the conflict and why not state it, they are going against human rights with the actions they are performing which by all means must be penalized and furthermore, I consider they should be sent to jail on the grounds that they stained the souls of a whole community, and hence, of the new generations of Temucuicui …. And to me, it is almost the same than killing the future for a child, which is also a felony, a bad action, a despicableand vicious crime.

  1. What's happening in the Araucanía is horrible and the worst thing about it is that we - as a country - don't seem to care. I never see these kind of news on TV and the only way these people's struggles are known are through posts on social media with a hundred shares at most. It's sickening

  2. I think that it is a great dishonour to our country that these practices are not punished by the government.

  3. This is horrible. The chilean state has always been violent with the Mapuches and the media show only one position of the conflict.

  4. I'm totally agree with your point. "Comando Jungla" is one of the most exaggerated ideas ever implanted...

    1. The State should recognize their original roots instead of dealing with them in a violent way. It pains me to see that they might be more animals than human beings (I mean, the police)

  6. Like you said this conflict is totally being managed by the media making them look like the violents, when actually the chilean state is mistreating the Mapuches.

  7. It's unbelievable how we spend our days minding in our bussiness and stressing about the most stupid things while in the Araucanía are being attacked by the State

  8. All what you said makes me think of what a double standard society the chilean one is: all governments pretend to defend the people in most need -such as children-, when actually what they do is assure they become the most vulnerable ones. State terrorism is unacceptable, but people don't want to see it.

  9. The press is one of great guilty to this abuses continue happening. If doesn´t exist the independent press , we know nothing about the other side.

  10. I totally agree with you, and I think our government should take a look in what they are doing for real, actually we all should do that.
